Welcome to the Hall H Show podcast – The Voice of Artist Alley and Independent Creators!

Nov 17, 2018

Painter. Sculptor. Street art muralist. Gmonik, a San Diego, CA based artist is all that and more.

Aaron Nabus here and on this final Hall H Show edition of our interviews from last year's DesignerCon 2017, we had the honor of spending some time getting to know Gmonik.

Though this wasn't the first time we had met him. He has established himself as a creative force in the local San Diego art community and we would occasionally see him and his partner in crime, Danielle at various events.

Unlike other booths at DesignerCon, their booth was very welcoming, almost like it was room inside their own home...which I think was intentional since it showcased his sculptures rather nicely.

While we talked, I got the sense that he, like his sculptures had a very deep underlying message.

Interestingly, in a San Diego City Beat article from a few years ago, he described his style as "trash pop" which gave him the opportunity to simultaneously provide nostalgia and social commentary. In this article, he said:

"I want to make it presentable in a sense that it's fun, but then if you really look at it and really evaluate it, it has deeper meaning. Anybody can make pretty pictures, but having something to say makes it more meaningful for me."

We hope you enjoy our DesignerCon 2017 conversation with Gmonik.

If you will be attending this year's DesignerCon 2018, which takes place in Anaheim, CA, November 16-18, 2018, make sure to stop by booth 337.
